Joe & Beth cross Italy

Joe and Beth have made their way to Italy via ferry, now making their way accrouse Italy to Napoli. Their 1st stop- 6/17/2010 is a good one!

Just spent 2 hours in small mountain trattoria - they spoke no English, we were limited to Joe's Italian - they grow and make everything they serve, including the red wine. We took photographs and they gave us their address to send them copies. Joe bought some of their salami to take with us and we left with a gift from them - a bottle of their homemade red wine - Beth is a happy camper ;-)

Italy segment

The middle Evans (Joe + Beth) left Dubrovnik Wed on overnight ferry (cabin "spacious" compared to trains!). Landed in Bari, Italy @ 7 AM Thurs but couldn't disembark until 8 because Italian police don't go to work until 8! All transportation has been an adventure!! Stopped in small mountain town for lunch while driving across Italy in rental car. Owners spoke no English and we were limited to Joe's Italian - but great meal and left with some of their homemade salami and wine, photos, and address to send copies of pictures. Ended up in Paestum Thurs afternoon - saw ruins and managed to get room at place Buffe and Ace stayed last fall! Fri Joe drove Amalfi coast to Sorrento - an arduous feat and Beth was suppose to be looking at scenery (with white knuckles and gasps of how close cliffs, autos, people, and buildings were to side mirror!). Really relieved when we made it to Sorrento and could turn in rental car! Went back to PPositano for lunch (an all day event) so Joe could actually see scenery! Raining buckets in Sorrento but still seeing great fireworks over Napoles Bay atnight fromour wonderful balconey. Plan on Pompei Mon, Capri Tues, Naples Wed, and long flight home Thurs.

The last Hours in Venice...

Today was/is the last day of the Grandma Evand Homeland Trip. Seems like just yesterday we were starting off with brothers Joe & Dave & Queens Beth & Becky. Tonight we pack as we leave in the am, Dave & Becky unpack in Cheyenne & Joe & Beth wind down in Napoli!
In our last hours Buffe and I took the slow boat down the Grand Canel, we actually waited for three boats so we could grab the front seats. The twilight made the colors come alive. You could feel the power and glory of Venice! The stupidity of man came in as we saw the 1st ghetto - Jews forced by the Venetians to live in a few blocks - this in about 1500. But then St Mark's Square, walk thru the streets, over the Acadamia Bridge, then to the last night restaurant for a second meal! Tonight lamb shank in a thyme sauce- superb! Gnochhi in a wine reduction - a trifle strong ...
Love to all!
When you travel bring a little love with you!

Venice!

GeoTagged, [N41.36504, W2.17113]

What a beautiful, magical city! Nothing like in the world! Wondered all over yesterday but had time for the Academia, one of the word's great museam, and Museam Correa which includes 3 othes, saw multiple churches, a crypt, and more Tiepolo's , Tinteretto's, Bellini's etc that u can shake a stick at. A short nap then a most wonderful dinner. Gnocchi with a smoky cheese sauce for Buffe and a white Ragusa over taglielle(sp$ for me.
More later as we have two churches to hit and a boat ride down the Grand Canel...

Post from Venezia....

Not too many internet spots that we could see, but found one this morning and trying to catch up after 2 days of not being "connected"....we've had lovely weather, but this morning we woke up to cool, breezy, cloudy day. Were in Peggy Guggenheim museum for 2 hrs, it must have sprinkled while we were in there, the museum is very very good. Highly encourage anyone to see it.
Have eaten some great meals, I forgot to take photos (!) but will try to remember tonight....

Dubrovnik

GeoTagged, [N41.36504, W2.17113]

Our time here is ended but beautiful memories we take with us. Over 70% of the buildings were damaged in the war of the 1990's but you would not know it. Yesterday I swam beneath the walls as they have done for 900 years and more. Today breakfast with brother Dave & lovely bride Becky, a final walkabout, beer & sandwich in the room and now the airport.
Best to all!
Ace

Adieu Dubrovnik!

Last morning in Dubrovnik. Joe & Beth left yesterday evening for Bari via the overnight ferry. They'll be adding their comments to this blog from: Bari, the drive to Sorrento, Sorrento & Napoli!! We leave today for Venice; Dave & Becky fly out for home tomorrow morning.
This has been a super great trip.
But before I say "adieu", a little re-cap of this truely beautiful city. Built in 1272, although parts are very very old. 1667 a huge earthquake hit , demolishing the city. The 1991-5 war, the citizens re-built most of everything with the world's help. It is a UNESCO Site. The walls are straight out of Knights of the Round Table. The water supply built in the 1200's is still used today. Everything is moved by hand-carts. There are a few very small motorized vehicles. Ace swam under the walls in the Adriatic yesterday. It was so refreshing!! The Adriatic is warm, some people swim all year long, it is so warm.

Update...

We may just go swimming, as our apartment owner said it was too hot to go around the ramparts. The walk around the ramparts takes 1 to 2 hours.....hm, swimming under the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, sounds good.

Post from Dubrovnik....

Sunny, warm, already in low 80's at 9am. Brothers & wives are sitting across from us, yak-ing it up. Boy is this a chi-chi town. Bbeautiful sights, beautiful people, beautiful weather. Pricey of course. Ok, I'm waiting for my eggs, bacon omelet...may have another cappucino... then a walk on the ramparts & wall!!

Tivat

GeoTagged, [N47.50027, W19.05492]

a vacation day from our vacation---that's what today was.

Walked the town; checked out the TI, got another town map, came upon several drill teams competition--got lots of photos; came back and swam in the Bay of Tivat (Adriatic), drank beer ate pizza, more swimming, laying around. Yes, a great day.

We'll be heading over to Mai Tai's a friendly bar by the Adriatic, for our evening cocktail before dinner....adieu til next post!
And we will be watching USA BEAT england in soccer like we did the last time!

Lamb and wine...

When last we blogged we were in Split heading out for a olive oil, wine , and honey tour. After a ferry ride of 45 minutes to the island of Solta. Frane (pronounced franny) the olive oil guy, picked us up & drove us to his olive grove. Under the shelter of an olive tree, Frane gave us the history of his olive trees; then off to the where his olives are pressed. The olives have been in the family for years. Some of the trees are over 1000 years old. Frame is on his 40's and gave up the corporate life to produce high quality, organic olive oil and help his country.
More info then we tasted & ate the most wonderful lunch & wine. The food was prepared by his mother using foods from the island. Bruschetta 2 kinds, one with rosemary infused olive oil, on shrimp & butter lettuce, the other with lemon infused olive oil on octopus & arugula. Rosemary grows wild and has a milder flavor that what we use. Roasted potato with garlic infused olive oil. The seafood risotto. I forgot to take pics, the food & wine was too tempting!
The wine was wonderful. Best the winers on the trip have had. Made as a hobby by a friend of Franne's.
We then headed off with the honey guy, Goren and his Russian wife, Natashsha. Like Franne his family had been on the island for generations. His label is a picture of him about 8 with Dad & Grandpa and a bee hive. Very passionate about bees but also doing someting for the people of his Country!
Now back in Split where we had Jagnjece -

To the island of Solta, off Split

Made our own breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh baguette from bakery shop, coffee ( hmm, that could've been better), Nutella, butter, and let's not forget prosciutto ! Yum!

We met our tour guide, strolled down the Riva (riverside waslikg street), and met up with the other tour dude. He walked us to ferry, got our tickets, gave us a short blurb on our day, and we shoved off at 9:15am. It's beautiful here. We are touring an olive producer, have lunch made by his Mama, I think it's a risotto with sea like grilled in...octopus, squid, shrimp... Will confirm that later....then to a honey producer, these are all organic, small family-run little productions. We were supposed to tour a family-run vineyard, but our guide today said nooo, but we could ask our driver and perhaps if time (and inclination) we might get to see it. Oh. Ace said the guide said it's not really a vineyard; the guy makes it in his basement.... However, he did tell us this island is where zinfendel was 'created / invented'. Good wine I gyess. :). It's to be 89 today. Sun sun sun here we come!....

We have requested a lamb dish for tonight. Lamb here are raised on herbs & grasses close to the sea, so it has a saltiness to the taste. Lamb is slow cooked in a peka, a large pot with lid that has hot coals laced on top of lid. Orators are added; takes 4 hrs. You have to order this dish 24 hrs in advance. Can't wait!

June 8 day in Ljubljana then off to Split by Night Train!!

Today we will stroll the streets of Ljubljana once more and then board a train to Zagreb and night train to Split!

Red Hair in Ljubljana.....

There are so many different colors of red hair in Ljubljana it is quite amazing. Most of the color red is almost a deep mahogany purple...I have tried to get a few photos of the array of colors but one thing is certain: they love red hair!!!

Train to Ljubljana and 1st day....

We arrived early at the 3rd railway station in BudaPest, it was the most modern and communistic of the 3. We all had some street food from vendors there (most of us had gyros, pižža and a hot dog were the chosen food items) before boarding the train. we picked a newer looking car and sure enough, it was in excellant shape. When the train left, we were bumbling along nicely, and enjoying the lovely scenery, when we crossed over the border to Slovenia. When the Slovenian conductor came along, he told us we would have to get off the train at some town, Ormuz I think. the tracks were under repair. he did not speak much english, but there was a Canadian couple on the train and they were told the same thing. So, we figured ok, we will get off and hopefully there will be other transportation, a bus like the conductor mentioned. yes, yes, bus, bus. there was!! lovely ride for about 40 minutes to beyond the track repair and onto another train. oh, should say here that the homes, farms, barns, stables all look so well maintained with full flower boxes on every conceiveable place and shelf. it was so pretty!! we thought it was a little Disney like in a way. The train moved fast when it could and we were only 15 minutes behind schedule. Took taxi to pensione. Lovely, just lovely. Pod Lippo Pensione. ljubljana is a very lovely city. Definitely the Cafe place. the women all dress up, looking very ˝with it˝ and sharp. we have been wandering all day, stopping to try on shoes (gladiator sandals are still going strong), having a beer, wine, fried squid, ice cream. Climb up to the Castle, ride the funicular back down. oh, did i mention it was very hot here?? HOT! love it!!! after a short nap, we are just about ready to head out again, grab a glass of wine and or beer, people watch, and then find a place to eat dinner. My this is a pretty town, and country. Found a salt shop that sells salt they have been harvesting for 1000s of years. (even salt chocolate!).....

Saint Stevens Cathedral

GeoTagged, [N47.50027, W19.05492]

Last day in Buda Pest. Only way to see inside the church was to pretend we were going to mass. Turns out it was a high mass with a Cardinal and the president & his wife. We left after the grand entry. This was part of the memorial for the Trinam(sp) treaty after WW1 where Hungary lost much territory and many people. The new government wants countries like Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia to allow native Hungarians who were seperated by the treaty to have two passports at the least. There is a further movement to even get the land back.

GeoTagged, [N50.08744, W14.41909]

Whatever else the Czechs have great beer - both pilsner & dark. Castle and Cathedral were both very impressive. Missed the Prime Minister & President by minutes but got pictures of three Czech news anchor women.
Went to the Jewish Quarters! Almost 80,000 Czech Jews were murdered by the Nazis. Hard to believe what we men do to one another.
Off to eat Italian tonight, then overnight Trsin to Buda Pest...

My companion - The Sleeper!

Brother Dave might also be called Mr. Relaxed. Nothing phases him. He cannot get lost because he doesn't know where he is. He can't get hungery or thirsty cus there is always a restaurant or bar close by. He can fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

My Companion -Mrs. Mom

Becky aka Mrs. Mom always keeps us together. She looks out for the straggler, makes sure we have correct change for the W/C and otherwise does all the Mom things. It's what comes with kids, foster child, exchange students , and classes of Special Needs children.

My companion The Planner!

Yes that's right Buffe loves to plan. Each item she carries has a planned use . Maps are required to plan the route. Books and notes to plan the day. The beauty is that she doesn't need to stick to a plan, at a moments notice she can change and start to replan.

Kutna Hora

Today was a great day! Last night's bed time was 1am so brkfast today was at 9am. Then on a cold & rainy day a 60 min walk to the train station and 75 mins later we were in Kutna Hora! This is UNESCO World Heritage site based on 7 or 8 well preserve middle Age churches & schools. In addition the town sat on a silver mine so it was very wealthy back in the day.

Of course the bus from the station went who knows where and the driver refused to play tourist guide. We got off with other tourist looky loos at the wrong stop. A mile walk took us to the Church of St. Barbara - a beautiful and well preserved Gothic style wigh an interior of Baroque & Rennaissance murals and stuff.
After that a long wet walk thru the old town. Lattes & cappucinos at a Italian caffeine then another walk to the Ossarary and Catherdral. These is where the Cisterians order of monks originated in 1400s. The Ossuary - the bones of some 40000 people used to decorate a large place. The idea is dust to dust and all that stuff. Actually rather amazing!
As you can guess another wet walk and a bit of a wait and we are on the train to Prague.
One good thing we did was buy a supply of cheeses, prosciutto, bread, & chocolate so we well fortified!
More later!

Plum Brandy

GeoTagged, [N50.08214, W14.40618]

What Grappa is to an Italian this is to a Czech! Restaurent full of English & Czech actors from the Fringe Festival. Made a lively place - lots of fun! So tomorrow we Fringe. The food continues to be excellent - pork w/ Plum sauce and Caramel apple.

The Velvet Revolution!

300,000 Czechs protested (peacefully)nightly for over 6 weeks until the communists gave up power. This is the long street or square where they assembled! Power to the people!

Food on the plate!

A small snack after 8 hrs of touristing! Cheeses, olives, bread.

8 hours walking Prague

So how much can you see in 8 hrs - lots but not nearly all!!! 1st it's worth remembering that the Czechs were freed from Communist rule by the Velvet Revolution in 1989 - only 21 years ago. So many of the people we walked among were the pro freedom demonstrators if a few years ago! To us this was amazing!!! The buildings are for the most part art nouveau. I think from about 1900 but I am not sure. In any case magnificent. It's a city ful of people walking. Dressed well, very litle obesity, tending young. hip and on the go!!!
Plenty of places to drink beer, all food eaten so far has been excellent. O no, after only a hour respite we are going out again. Dinner about 9 then maybe some of the famous Prague night life.

Buffe enjoys the plane!

Fly, arrive, and Prague!

Ok typing on iPhone so may be short! Ace & Buffe arrived with no problem. David & Becky another story. Flight from Denver was cancelled so rebooked on Luftansa leaving 5 hrs later.
Prague is quite beautiful. The buildings are of a style from back back back in the day! Went to the Black Ox for beers. The 2 servers tried their best to dissuade the tourists from feeling welcome but we perservered. Sat bent to a drunk who's English was limited to'twist em' right, thist em' left, do the shimmy shimmy shake!" 8 pints of great beer for $8. Dinner roast beef covered w/ plum sauce & whipped cream. You could cutin w/ a fork and it was delish. Today the Castle, walking tour by Ace, and beer !!

Getting Ready

This trip was inspired by our Granmother Edith Zini Evans. Her parents were from Budapest and Tivat. Thus we journey! This Blog is inspired by the Blog ( elnomad.com/tolatitude000.php ) of my friends Rebecca & Arturo and so I will Blog my way throught the Balkens. As of today its 7 days until we leave for Prague - our starting point. Our advance scounts, Patty and Tony LeDonne, have been sending tips on bars, pubs, and wine bars so we are prepared!
